Two years ago, Dr Julius Awakame; a Ghanaian psychiatrist working for the North Essex Partnership Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom advised a patient to seek spiritual help by watching Pastor T.B. Joshua's Emmanuel TV, adding that she should call the Church in Lagos to request for 'some nice holy water.'
He told the patient, 'neither psychiatry not psychology would be able to help because there are special forces at play.'
The 50 year-old doctor diagnosed her of having a history of ‘satanic ritual abuse,’ telling her he had seen a lot of people get healed by watching Emmanuel TV.
However a fellow nurse colleague named Martin Rowe who the patient had disclosed this to, confronted the doctor if she was indeed possessed, which the medic replied: ‘She may well be’ and claimed she had been thrown out of her local church due to her condition.
Awakame has been found guilty of misconduct charges by a medical tribunal in the UK and could face serious disciplinary measures.
In an email to the panel he said 'I consider all these proceedings flogging of a dead horse. But I understand the GMC has to go through the motions.' He said he didn't have the 'time or resources' to be involved in the proceedings.
The doctor's employment with the North Essex Partnership Foundation Trust was terminated the following month. He moved back to Ghana.
Today Awkame faced being struck off after he was found guilty in his absence at a medical tribunal of a number of misconduct charges
Awakame studied for a masters degree at the University College of London and a PhD at the University of Leeds.
