More than seventy people died after a packed train derailed
in the town of Eseka, located between the capital, Yaoundé, and Douala.
Another 600 were reportedly injured. According to rail
officials, the train capacity was 600, but due to an earlier landslide that
made it impossible for people to travel by road, the train carried 1,300 passengers. However, a Cameroonian sent me a tweet claiming that death toll got to 300:
Meanwhile, many Cameroonians are upset that their President
has been out of the country on vacation since September. Paul Biya is presently
in Switzerland, from where he expressed his condolences on Twitter and
Facebook.
