I'm stepping down - Gambia's Yahya Jammeh announces on National TV

Gambia's President Yahya Jammeh has said on state television that he has decided to relinquish power.

This is coming after he refused to step down for weeks after losing the recent election.

The announcement early on Saturday came hours after the new president, Adama Barrow, said Jammeh had finally "agreed to leave".

Jammeh on TV said: "I believe in the importance of dialogue.. I have decided today in good conscience to relinquish the mantle of leadership of this great nation."

"I am proud and honoured to have served The Gambia."

"I submit myself only to the judgement of Allah"

"I am proud and honoured to have been of service to you."

"I believe in the capacity of Africans to decide for themselves all issues on way to democracy, social and economic development."

He thanked his mother, wife and kids for their support.

    1. I don't know your but what I know is that you are a mean fellow. These mean words and enuendos you've levelled on Adeola shows how shollow minded and stupid you can be. Adeola has been doing a wonderful job to inform the world about the regrettable things that go on in Africa. Instead of giving her a pad in the back, you've resorted to insults. Yahyah Jammeh is a good and popular president as you say, why then did you not vote for him to remain in power? Why was he defeated by Mr Barrow? By refusing to leave power after being defeated in an election which he himself has always boasted of being so-credible that it cannot be rigged was he not endangering the lives of Gambians. Is Adeola wrong to have reported on the last declaration of Yahyah Jammeh to finially step down. He calls himseld 'SheihkProfeasor Doctor'in what discipline is he a professor. Illitracy personified! It is because of dull and shallow minded people like you that Africa is as backward as it is today. Please go back yo school and reply the. Coconut water found in your head with some useful knowledge!

  2. This is very sad and uncharitable comments on Adeola.she is a jonalist and by the profession, only report news and events as they unfold.she neither supports the former nor incoming president as such no reason for you to abuse her.

  3. If you are Adama Barrow, would you serve under the prevailing circumstances created by Jammeh? Jammeh could be dangerous if allowed to remain in The Gambia. Jammeh would pose a big threat to peace if allowed to remain in The Gambia.

So, to ensure the safety President Barrow and peace in The Gambia, Jammeh must leave Gambia and that's the right thing to do. Period.

So it's now a crime to report a news that is being followed up round the world. What in particular did Adeola do to you because you sound like you have personal problems with her. She only gave us an update to whats going on in The Gambia and you came all out on her with excessive force. this is very disappointing of you and you should be ashamed of yourself for being this rude. I really don't know why we just can't get along in Africa. It only takes seconds after a post in social media for Africans to start insulting themselves with no valid point as to why the insults are even coming up. The truth is Adeola was just keeping it real and to be honest if you ask me i would suggest to you that if you don't like what you see, i wonder what you were even doing here in the first place if you are not a secret fan. please lets stop the hypocrisy and keep it real 100%. Adeola Well done biko
