Acting President Yemi Osinbajo on Thursday visited Port Harcourt to inaugurate the world’s biggest fertiliser plant built by Indorama Eleme Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited.
Mr Laolu Akande, the Senior Special Assistant to the Acting President on Media and Publicity, made the announcement in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to the presidential aide, the plant with production capacity of 1.5 million metric tonnes of Urea fertiliser is considered the world’s largest single-train Urea plant.
Eleme Petrochemicals Company Ltd, now Indorama Eleme Fertilizer and Chemicals Limited, was privatised in 2006 after the sale of Federal Government’s 75 per cent shares to a core investor through competitive bidding process.
The plant has a production capacity of 4,000 metric tonnes of nitrogenous fertiliser per day. It was built with $1.5bn.
The opening of the plant is expected to boost the agriculture sector not just in Nigeria, but also in Africa and beyond.
Akande said fertiliser from the plant would be made available to farmers nationwide at an affordable cost.
This will boost crop yield for farmers and help in minimising food grain deficit in Nigeria, Akande said.
The plant consists of 2300 TPD Ammonia plant, 4000 TPF Urea plant, 83 km long Gas Pipeline, and an Export Port Terminal.
The main plant, measuring approximately 40 hectares, is located within the perimeter of Indorama’s existing petrochemical site in Port Harcourt.
The Gas Pipeline for the fertiliser plant was constructed by IEFCL within an existing 15 meter wide Right of Way (“ROW”).
Part of the $1.5bn was used to build a new jetty at Onne Port on a plot of land measuring approximate 6 hectares
The jetty comprises 320 m long Quay along with terminal infrastructure including all material handling facilities necessary for urea and a urea storage facility with a capacity of 45,000 MT.
The transfer of urea from the fertiliser plant will be by road via an existing road network.
Construction of the new fertiliser plant commenced in early 2013 with commissioning coming two years later than planned.

But irony of it is that the ceremony was characterized by Protest of not just wounded, but military/indian brutalized EMPLOYEES of the same World Class company who recieve nothing but less than a peanut price ... It's so. Sad, please help the Mr. VP to do something ..

No wonder, I saw some of the employees carrying playcards! I know that something is not right till I found out from one of my friend who is an employee (Process Operator), in the so call IEFCL, who told me that their salary is 46,000 Naira while their fellow Indian Operator earns 2.1 million Naira not to mention that it's the Nigerians that do the main work & the most Hazardous part of the job! the hazard allowance is 3,000. and so on.... in short, the welfare package is very poor for the Nigerian Staffs there and it's a World Class company, The Company refuses to Unionise them to the Union they should belong to, instead the management are forcing them to another Union which is against the labor act and the Nigeria Constitution! He even told me that on 13th of July, 2017 The Nigerian Military took orders from an Indian Head of Security to Brutalize, Dehumanize, and Humiliate the IEFCL Employees (Their fellow Nigerians) on a peaceful protest to increase their welfare! And these are things that can never happen in other countries, not even in Indian!
ReplyDeleteI was not surprised @ the press for not publishing this story ( the press members that were present on 27/07/2017, saw the Employees crying for help with their playcards, but instead of that it's the drama between Gov. Nyesom Wike and Rotimi Amechi was what they debated on ) Cos I hear that the Indians do say " All Nigerians have their price tag, from our President to the Unborn Child "! what a slap on our face!
Mr President/ Mr V.President, Pls do something! This is nothing but modern slavery in our Own country!
