'I will be sworn in as president on Dec. 12' - Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga told an impromptu rally on Tuesday he would hold an assembly that would swear him in as president on Dec. 12, less than an hour after President Uhuru Kenyatta was inaugurated for a second, five-year term.

Minutes after Odinga spoke, riot police teargassed his convoy and charged the crowd.

"On December 12, we will have an assembly that will swear me in," Odinga told supporters gathered along a road in the Nairobi suburb of Eastlands after police sealed off the location where he had planned to hold a rally earlier in the day.

Kenyatta won a repeat presidential election in October that Odinga boycotted.

  1. No man is bigger than a country. So, if Odinga swears himself in as President, he should be arrested, tried for treason or (whatever law in the Kenya books, he may have violated) and if convicted, sent to jail to serve as a deterrent to others that may engage in such an impunity.

    1. There's a good reason the state won't attempt that. He has a solid population behind him, a populace that has always been denied their rightful leader through rigging. Out of 19.5million reg'd voters, only verifiable 3.5m voted for the incumbent in the repeat elections.
